FAQ

How many papers are in HKDSE English?
Four: Paper 1 Reading, Paper 2 Writing, Paper 3 Listening and Integrated Skills, and Paper 4 Speaking, plus school-based assessment. Paper 3 carries a large share of the marks and has a listening part and an integrated-skills part where you must use the audio and print materials together to produce a written text.
What grades do universities require?
The common baseline is 3322: level 3 in Chinese and English, level 2 in Mathematics and Citizenship/Social Development. Some programmes require a higher English level, such as level 4, and interviews may be conducted in English. A few institutions accept alternative English qualifications such as IELTS, so check the programme page.
Is tutoring worth it?
It depends on the weakness. If the gap is vocabulary and grammar, small-group tutoring plus wide reading helps. If the problem is time management and source integration in Paper 3, you need a teacher who can walk through past papers question by question. Tutoring does not replace practice: aim for at least one timed paper a week with a full review.
How should I prepare for Paper 3?
Practise note-taking first, recording only keywords and figures, then practise combining the audio with the print materials into the required text type. Common mark losses come from copying too much of the source, using the wrong format (a report, email and article have different requirements) and losing control of length. Use past papers under timed conditions and have them marked against the HKEAA criteria.
