FAQ

How many international schools are there in Hong Kong?
According to the EDB, there are 54 international schools including one special school. In 2023/24 about 42,100 students attended them, 6.4% of all primary and secondary students. They are private, self-financing schools and generally receive no public subsidy for capital or running costs.
What share of students must be non-local?
International schools that received a school site or land under a service contract must admit at least 70% non-local students (raised from 50% in 2009). A "local student" is a Hong Kong permanent resident without any valid passport other than the HKSAR passport; everyone else counts as non-local.
What are debentures, capital levies and nomination rights?
Because international schools are self-financing, some issue debentures, charge a capital levy or offer nomination rights to fund infrastructure and development. Names, amounts and whether they are refundable or transferable differ by school. Buying one does not guarantee a place.
What should I compare between schools?
① Curriculum: IB, English National Curriculum (GCSE/A Level), US AP or others. ② Accreditation and track record. ③ Class size and teacher-student ratio. ④ Weight and level of Chinese teaching. ⑤ School bus coverage. ⑥ Total cost: tuition plus debenture/levy plus extras. Registration and fee information is published in the EDB Private Schools Register.
